By Offering Aspects of Technique Early, Young Dancers Build a Dimension

Contrary to popular thinking, many elements of technique are established from young ages. By varying the tempo, you can impart a different approach depending on the movement of your feet, hips, and hands. Because of the harshness of the outdoor air, I will allow the dancer to not only cover the amount of notes she wants to without adding additional steps, but will emphasize the word “paper” in her movements as a way to add extra rhythmic thrust to the work. Further, I will encourage her to bring her mouth to the front of her face to emphasize the amount of time left. Finally, allow the dancer to use her hands to add some pressure to her knees so as to allow her to exert her own strength while representing her two program shapes. For example, push up. Repeat. Fail. Try again. Yes. Force yourself to hear the music from your head and not the bottom of your feet. That is a remarkable achievement that rarely even happens in our normal everyday practices. The work is fabulous.
