Daily 5: Why This Holiday Season, Go Water Cooler-Free

Research has shown that many aspects of the Facebook-obsessed, social media-wired world have a negative impact on mental health, like its existence in the first place. One of my upcoming holiday columns at The New York Times Magazine profiles several woman-led Facebook-free social media sites that aim to escape the deluge of information, engagement and spectacle of typical posts, as well as escape the sexualized misogyny of Facebook and the increasingly violent temper of the Internet. The end result: A busy life of thankless routine is reduced to a healthy dose of joy.

One way to experience this lightly without going completely fish-out-of-water is by reading Audre Lorde’s Who Am I and Find My Way Home. Lorde’s essays on social prejudice or oppression are sure to lift your mood on the weekend.

Bixi Museum

Location: Brooklyn, N.Y.

Why it’s worth it: While most New Yorkers are in dire need of a clear night’s sleep, visitors can rent out Bixi at the same time, when it offers a crucial chance to spend time outdoors.

AMC Theaters

Location: Arlington, Va.

Why it’s worth it: If you want to bask in the bright glow of a big-screen cinematic experience without the sweaty sweat of most popcorn snacks, AMC Theaters in the District and Pentagon City offer movie nights.

Neuehouse

Location: New York, N.Y.

Why it’s worth it: Neuehouse’s allure stems from its compact garden-and-elegant-home vibe, not to mention excellent cocktails.

Reardon’s Island Coffee

Location: Brooklyn, N.Y.

Why it’s worth it: Some people say you don’t have to drink coffee to be stressed. That’s baloney. And if, when you’re done drinking, you’re still stressed, then you’re given a solution. If only it was better than that cup of coffee.

Milano Fine Wines

Location: Manhattan, N.Y.

Why it’s worth it: In addition to wines, the store stocks craft cocktails and raw kale.
