The Senate Judiciary Committee was scheduled to hold its hearing on a nomination to the United States Supreme Court on Monday at 10 a.m. Eastern time. The appearance of Judge Brett Kavanaugh was expected to be the second time that he was set to address the matter that made him so infamous in the first place: allegations of sexual assault. Kavanaugh has previously accused the Democrats of offering those men who were accused of sexual assault, some sort of political favor, and continuing to collude with left-wing groups to the benefit of Democratic nominees. His apparent attack on these Democrats may have been an effort to overcome the outright hostility from his own party to his nomination. But he did not move any further in addressing the accusations, and remained silent for 45 minutes in part due to his newly hired defense lawyer. Later, after requesting an adjournment due to an unforeseen security threat, the committee voted 10-9 in favor of extending the hearing on the nominee’s nomination. Though the full Senate may vote to approve Judge Kavanaugh’s nomination, it is important to note that only half of the Republicans in the Senate have the votes to confirm him, which means that Judge Kavanaugh’s nomination may in fact fail.
