If you’re new to the US and have just moved to California, we may have a surprise waiting for you at the bottom of your mailbox: a ballot box.
Solving the mystery of the ballot box is no easy task. Before we take your time at your first-ever neighborhood Neighborhood Neighborhood, here’s how to find and fill out the correct ballot in under 10 minutes.
1. Registration Matters
To vote in California, you need to be a registered voter. So there’s no point in staying home if you didn’t register.
2. Where to Pick Up a Ballot
There are two ways to collect mail-in ballots. The most common method is to pick them up at a polling station in person, by a poll worker or by calling 877-838-3838. Both methods take 10 to 15 minutes to complete.
3. How to Pick Up a Ballot Online
You don’t have to come to a polling station to pick up your mail-in ballot. California has no specific rules for mail-in ballot collecting. Instead, people can choose one of a number of platforms (such as online or snail mail) to schedule their pick-up for just about any time of day. There are also third-party services like TheVoteNumber that will search for available postal pickup locations in your area.
4. And How to Pack the Ballot
For the purpose of a mail-in ballot, you don’t have to use up all of your postage: it can still be accepted if you use a mail-in ballot that’s as high as you pay, which can be up to 50 cents per extra cent.
