The Houston Police Department on Friday night tweeted that two officers were shot while responding to a call that turned into a shootout. No one was shot during the active shooter scene.
The National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund has released statistics of officers killed during the week of October 14, 2016, showing that of the total, 22 officers were killed while on duty.
On Friday night, one officer, Officer Brian Bachmann, had been shot in the chest. The other officer, Officer James Kemp, had been shot in the face. The officer with the bullet in his face was transported to Ben Taub Hospital. Bachmann has since been listed in stable condition, police said.
The officers were the latest victims of a spate of shootings involving police this year.
According to the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund, there have been 122 killed in the line of duty in 2016 so far. That number already surpasses last year’s total, in which there were 121, according to the group’s preliminary figures.
