For most viewers, Saturday Night Live kicked off the week with the best sketch of the season. Host SNL opened the show with an explosive, family dynamic-heavy bit showcasing Melissa McCarthy’s performance as White House Press Secretary Sean Spicer.
SNL cast member Pete Davidson was heavily featured throughout the sketch, to the point where Spicer’s wife and children overshadowed all his other colleagues. The sketch went on to pick apart several aspects of the White House press room and unpack Spicer’s complicated relationship with Sean. And then, the show decided to share some of the best Spicer clips SNL viewers had missed, from his infamous finger wag to his appearance on The Daily Show with Trevor Noah.
All in all, the sketch really showed off what SNL can do when they want to impress the camera, but focus on their main, more funny, character. The other notable aspects included McCarthy’s facial expressions and her routine vocal work as well as the presence of family members like Ben to Teddy to Liz.
The show couldn’t have started better.
