What to Watch For in the First Presidential Debate

A presidential debate focused on substance – more than personality and attack – could leave room for an entire cadre of candidates, not just the two men in the center, to make an impression. The phrase especially evokes Vice President Joe Biden, who used to be an adept debater, and it’s what you’ll likely see in tonight’s debate between Mr. Trump and Mrs. Clinton. Like the others, they declined to discuss the debate. Some participants said they weren’t interested in the topic at hand, so they didn’t ask. Others talked about the stress of being in a tight race with Mrs. Clinton. Those who opposed the idea of going after Mr. Trump said they agreed with his proposal to jail his political opponents, but agreed that he should be treated differently. You’ll see some of those comments tonight on the political farce that is this campaign season. Whether it’s Democrats who are wary of accusing their opponent of being out of touch with middle-class voters or Republicans who see it as unseemly to talk about his treatment of women and his brash attitude towards any discussion of policy, people often don’t see eye to eye. In a two-way race that increasingly comes down to a battle for the independent voters, it helps that many of the candidates seem to be at about the same place on the issues.
